Morning Musings
Pop Quiz: When's the last time you slept in as late as you wanted, without an alarm or care in the world? For me, that day was Monday (yay, federal holidays!). And before that, it was Sunday. And you know what? It felt pretty darn good.
For an overly ambitious, neurotic perfectionist, Type A busy addict like me, sleeping is usually considered a luxury, not a necessity. I can survive on less than eight hours of sleep, I'd tell myself, I'll just get a venti iced coffee at Starbucks.Â
After falling asleep during my morning bus ride more times than I could count and being less than functional at work, I knew something needed to change. I needed to change and my sleep patterns needed to change right along with them. Think about it, we had bedtime routines as kids, why not indulge in them as adults? Here's what my adult bedtime routine looks like...

1) Shut off electronics at least one hour before bedtime. Thanks to Apple's built-in features, my phone automatically goes into "do not disturb" and "night shift" modes at 10 p.m., along with sending me a friendly bedtime reminder.
2) Shower. Now a bubble bath with candles and champagne would definitely be more relaxing, but a quick shower with a calming scented body wash also does the trick.Â
3) Meditate. Sometimes I have trouble getting my brain to turn off after a busy day, which is where meditation comes in handy. I've tried a few on the Insight timer app and let's just say I've never finished them because I always fall asleep beforehand. Namaste.

My Latest Obsession

It's only fitting to close the last newsletter of Black History Month with some bona fide #BlackGirlMagic. The March cover of EBONY featuring Jurnee Smolett-Bell is EVERYTHING! And I'm not just saying that because my former boss is the editor-in-chief and my perpetual work husband is the creative director. Okay, maybe that has something to do with it -- seeing their hard work pay off is simply beautiful. Want more #BlackGirlMagic in your mailbox?
