Morning Musings
Growing up middle-class in the suburbs with two parents and a private-school education, I always knew that I had a privileged upbringing. But it wasn't until recently that I fully understood the extent of that privilege.
Sure, I'm a Black woman, which comes with its own set of challenges, but for the most part, I live a pretty privileged life. I'm college-educated with a full-time salaried job with benefits. I live in a condo in one Chicago's nicest (read: wealthiest) neighborhoods. I've also had the luxury of working unpaid internships and studying abroad. And I'm a Christian woman who's married to a man. According to Buzzfeed's "Check Your Privilege" quiz, I scored a 67/100 in terms of privilege.

I say all of that to say this: we ALL have some kind of privilege, whether we care to acknowledge it or not. And having privilege isn't necessarily a bad thing. But as my home church, Soul City Church, said in this sermon, it's what we do with our privilege that matters.
Writing is the best way I know to express myself and it's also the best way I know to help others. It's my hope that this newsletter, my blog and freelance stories I write may help shine light on worthy causes and bring awareness to important issues.
You don't have to be a millionaire to make a difference. How will you use your privilege as a platform today?

One of my favorite wedding memories is the "first look" I did with my dad.

At 6’2 and 200-something pounds, he can seem a bit intimidating at first glance. But, as my sister and I know very well, he’s actually a teddy bear with a heart of gold. Read more about our special moment in my latest for HelloGiggles.
