Reclaiming my time ✌

"You can't pour from an empty cup." —Unknown
Morning Musings
Raise your hand if you're tired. I mean, TIE-RRD. Like ALL the way burnt out (*raises both hands*). And I'm willing to bet I'm not the only one. I know, I know ... I've wondered aloud why millennial women are so tired and shared my hypothesis here.
But as for me personally? Well, where do I start? I could rattle off all the reasons why I'm mentally, emotionally and physically exhausted, but it all boils down to this simple fact: I'm a people-pleaser. Always have been and unsuccessfully attempting to no longer be.
You see, my default when someone asks me something -- anything -- is to say "yes." Sometimes the words tumble out of my mouth before my brain has even had a chance to process what, exactly, the person is actually asking of me. Because I want to help. Because I want to feel needed and important. Because I'm a "good person," I tell myself.
Well, enough's enough. I know I've shared this article from Black Girl in Om before, but it's worth sharing again because you cannot pour from an empty cup. Simple as that. And this article from Shine echoes the same sentiment: "You need yourself more than anyone else needs you."
Y'all, "no" is not a four-letter word (literally and figuratively). You're not obligated to meet every demand put upon you, nor should you. It's high time we follow Auntie Maxine's lead and reclaim our time.

In fact, I've put a moratorium on coffee and lunch dates with people I don't know for the month of October, with a possible extension until the New Year. If it can't be resolved in an email or call, it ain't happening. Nothing personal, strictly business. Because I'm tired. And I need to refuel. Perhaps you should do the same.

My Latest Obsession

Okay, obviously the Spice Girls aren't my "latest" obsession, but Spotify's new "Your Time Capsule" feature totally is. The playlist is full of nostalgic hits from your teens and 20s, which is why mine is full of Spice Girls, Britney Spears and *NSYNC. It's like #ThrowbackThursday every day and I'm ALL the way here for it. Get your personalized playlist here.
