Morning Musings
Recently, I started reading Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers: The Story of Success" on the recommendation of one of my mentors. The book, published in 2008, is a favorite among CEOs and entrepreneurs. I'm about halfway through and this notion about the 10,000-hour rule stood out to me.
The idea is that it takes approximately 10,000 hours to become an expert on a given subject. I began reflecting on this hypothesis more deeply after learning that Beyoncé reportedly had 11-hour rehearsals in the weeks leading up to her epic Coachella performances.
Eleven hours a day for about three weeks or so ... that's more than 200 hours alone. Not to mention the countless hours the singer's put in since she started performing professionally in her teens.

As she sang in "Diva," "Since 15 in my stilettos, been struttin' in this game." So it's safe to say that Beyoncé has put in her 10,000 hours. Practice doesn't necessarily make perfect, but it brings you pretty darn close.
What do you want to be an expert in? What are you willing to put in 10,000 hours of work toward? If you want to write a book, are you writing an hour a day? (Speaking mostly to myself here, don't mind me.) If you want to become the next Misty Copeland, are you practicing pliés every day? You catch my drift.
No one becomes an expert overnight. And this isn't to say all of us aspire to become experts. But if there is a lofty goal you're daydreaming about making a reality someday, are you doing the (inner) work?

My Latest Obsession

Fact: I've been in search of the perfect nude eyeshadow palette ever since my Naked one ran out. So when I heard that Mented, a cosmetics company ran by TWO Black women, was releasing an Everyday Eyeshadow Palette full of nude and neutral shades, I was ecstatic.
Admittedly, I didn't have much luck with their nude lipsticks (it's hard to find the perfect shade online), but I'm happy to report that the eyeshadow palette is my new fave. The shades are highly pigmented, so just a dab will do for everyday looks, but you can easily build them up for happy hour and date night. Get 15% off your first purchase here.
