Morning Musings
After a whirlwind weekend of travel, which had me in California, New Jersey and Maryland all within a span of 24 hours, I decided to take a mental health day today.
It was either that, or succumb to a cold and have to take a sick day anyway (which is what happened last time I had a lot of travel in a short period of time). So I decided to be proactive. And, as my manager kindly reminded me, mental health is just as important as physical health.

Admittedly, I don’t always practice what I preach when it comes to self-care and wellness. But, in light of recent news regarding the suicide deaths of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain, I decided it was time to hit pause and put myself at the top of my to-do list.
Once upon a time (in the not-so-distant past), I used to pride myself on being a machine … constantly cranking out content and fixing other people’s problems like a real-life Olivia Pope. And we all know how that story ends.
Recently I found myself burning both ends of the candle and realized I’m not doing anyone any favors, least of which myself, when I’m beyond burned out.
Thankfully, I work at an organization that names sustainable success as one of its core values and for a manager who not only understands, but empathizes when I say simply, “I need a break.”
So today I’m doing exactly that: taking a break. I may go to yoga. I may get my nails done. If Chicago’s weather is cooperating, I may read by the beach. Or I may simply binge-watch bad reality TV.

Self-care comes in many forms. We’ll see where the spirit moves me. And if your batteries could use some recharging, I encourage you to take a mental health day as well. You deserve it.

My Latest Obsession

In a world that seems full of despair, it's timely that this week's obsession is The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu with Douglas Carlton Abrams.
Gifted to me by a coworker to read while recovering from fibroid surgery last November, I just recently got around to this life-changing book last month. And whew, I didn't know how much my soul so desperately needed this!
Imagine a weeklong conversation between two of the world's greatest religious leaders about our most basic human desire: to be happy. But more than that, to have and experience real, authentic joy. Even if you're not religious, spiritual, etc., this book will change the way you see the world for the better.
