Morning Musings
I haven't been feeling very patriotic lately. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful to have been born an American citizen and I enjoy all of the privileges that come along with it.
But how can I be proud of a country with a long-standing history of tearing apart families? A country that prioritizes the Second Amendment over the lives of children, journalists and countless other innocent people? A country that continually disrespects my very existence as a Black woman? A country that puts the comfort of White America over freedom of speech at football games?

To quote Drake's new song, "I'm upset."
Actually, I'm more than upset. I'm pissed. I'm outraged. I'm livid. I'm ashamed of and disgusted by what this country has become.Â
Once upon a time, I looked forward to the Fourth of July -- all of the parades and festivities and, of course, the fireworks. Hell, I even collected Old Navy's flag tees and tanks every summer religiously.
But in recent years, I've started to feel as though this holiday isn't for me, something my fellow Black Americans have realized for sometime now. "Land of the free and home of the brave"? Not for us. This is America.

My Latest Obsession

Admittedly, I didn't tune in regularly to the original iteration of Queer Eye. But after several friends recommended watching the latest season on Netflix, my husband, Jeff, and I obliged. And I've been hooked ever since.
The bus-stop ads promoting the show with a box of tissues and the copy "I'm not crying, you're crying" are not an exaggeration. Each episode we've watched so far has had me ALL in my feels.
As the show's tagline suggests, "it's more than a makeover." And it reminds me of all that is good with humanity and America.
