"I dream a dream that dreams back at me." — Toni Morrison
Morning Musings
Have you ever been in a room where 42 women of color breathe in and exhale the weight of the world? I did this past weekend at the Starshine and Clay Yoga Retreat.
I first interviewed the founder, Octavia Raheem, a few years ago for Brit+Co about wedding yoga. And, as I'm wont to do, I started following her on social media and fell in love. I resolved to one day attend her yoga retreat for women of color. It took me a couple of years, but I'm SO glad I did it.

During one of our sessions, Octavia asked us two questions:
1) What are you dreaming of right now?
2) What do you have to let go of to achieve it?
I was fully prepared to launch into my usual spiel about dreaming of someday becoming a published author. But when the talking stick made its way to me, I shared a dream I'd never said aloud.Â
"I'm dreaming of becoming a mom."
And I stopped, covered my mouth as if I was trying to shove the words back in and started to cry. I turned to the woman next to me and said, "That was weird to say out loud."
Yes, I've written essay after essay about all the reasons I've put motherhood on pause. And they were both true at the time I wrote them.
If I'm being totally honest, this is a dream I've been carrying around for some time now. But as one of the women who shared the same dream said, "If I don't try, then I can't fail."
And for a Type-A perfectionist control-freak like me, failure is simply not an option. So, to answer the second question, what I have to let go of to make my dream come true is control and my over-planning tendencies. I have to let go and let God, which is admittedly something I struggle with.
Now I pose the questions to you: What are you dreaming of and what do you have to let go of to make it happen?
As Rumi says, "What you seek, is seeking you."

Truth be told, Rumi Kaur's Milk and Honey had been on my to-read list for quite some time. And I finally got around to it during the yoga retreat. Okay, devoured is more like it.Â
I know it's gotten mixed reviews, but I can assure you that I will be revisiting this collection for years to come ... as evident by the number of pages I dog-eared for future reference.
