"You're no good to anyone if you're no good to yourself." — Michelle Obama
Morning Musings
During my monthly accountability call with my friend Anuli, I posited that we take some time to reflect on the following prompt: Name three things you’re proud of in 2018 and three things you’re looking forward to in 2019.
I also suggested that we should take a moment to celebrate the things we did that may not have resulted in the desired outcome (yet). Because hey, at least we did "the thing!" and sometimes we don't give ourselves enough credit for the small wins.
So without further ado, here’s my list:
Three things I’m proud of in 2018:
1) Completing my book proposal. While I don’t have an agent or a book deal (yet), crossing this big-ticket item off my to-do list felt like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders.
2) Buying a house. If you had told me five years ago that we would be settling down in Chicago (for now), I would have laughed it off. But four months into our new home, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
3) Hosting a blogaversary party. I first had the idea for this last summer when I realized that my fifth Chicagoversary (and thus the conception of LT in the City) fell on a Saturday. What happened next was a (stressful at times) extravaganza celebrating local woman-owned businesses and benefiting Polished Pebbles, a mentoring program for Black girls 7-17.
Here’s what I’m looking forward to (so far) in 2019:
1) Getting a book deal. Yes, I'm speaking it into existence, dammit. P.s. If you know any nonfiction literary agents interested in self-help books, holla at me!
2) Speaking at Alt Summit. This will be the biggest stage I've spoken on thus far. Am I nervous? Absolutely. Am I excited beyond compare? HELL YEA!
3) Going on a yoga retreat for women of color. Yes, I loved Octavia Raheem's Starshine & Clay retreat this past fall that I'm signed up to go again next year with my homegirl Sierra. It's about to be LITTY!!
What are you proud of this year and what are you looking forward to next year? Hit "reply" and let me know!
Housekeeping note: This will be the last issue of the LT in the City Weekly until Wednesday, Jan. 9. In keeping with my plan to hibernate instead of hustle over the winter break, I'm planning to unplug, read a lot and watch some bad reality TV.
Thanks so much for sharing your inbox with me this year and I'll see you in 2019!
Love,

My Latest Obsession

I'll always be a "All I Want for Christmas is You" fan, but John Legend's A Legendary Christmas is quickly becoming one of my holiday favorites!
Of course he covers classics like "The Christmas Song" and even collaborates with Stevie Wonder on the latter's "What Christmas Means to Me." But the standouts, in my opinion, are the originals, such as "Bring Me Love" and the New Orleans-inspired "Merry Merry Christmas."
I may or may not be playing this one into the New Year...
