"Self-definition and self-determination is about the many varied decisions that we make to compose and journey toward ourselves ... It's okay if your personal definition is in a constant state of flux as you navigate the world." — Janet Mock
Morning Musings
To be honest, I've never understood women who are proud about not having any female friends. The ones who lament: "Women are catty." "I'm just one of the guys." "I never get along with women."
Umm, you mean out of the BILLIONS of us on Earth, you can't find one or three to get along with? The problem may be you, homie.
You know the popular Instagram post, "behind every successful woman, there's a group chat hypin' her up"? That is quite literally my life. And, to be clear, different chats for different vibes.

There's my besties group chat with my girls Sarah and Marissa. My accountability group chat with Anuli and Chasity. Book club lovers with Sierra and Heather. And my Sister Circle chat with Wakita, Cecilia, Shanea and Raquel.

You best believe we're constantly hypin' each other up -- whether it's a promotion, a new hairstyle, or simply a cute selfie. And we're there for each other during the difficult times, too -- deaths of loved ones, breakups (and makeups), shitty bosses, infertility ... you name it.
I am nothing without my girls. They get me. And I've got them. Which is why I'm celebrating them on Galentine's Day and every day.
Love,
L'Oreal

ICYMI
In writing out the core values for my blog in preparation to onboard my editorial assistant/social media manager/right-hand woman (hi, Najja!), I listed "authenticity" first and foremost:
We show up each and every day as our authentic selves … flaws and all. We believe in and bring out the best in each other.
So I was super excited to write about keeping it all the way real in my latest for Shine.

Editor's Note: In honor of Black History Month, I'm spotlighting articles and essays written by and/or about Black women.
My Latest Obsession

Like any self-respecting Black millennial woman, I am obsessed with Insecure. And while Molly is hands-down my favorite character, I've got love for Tiffany, too.
I remember Amanda Seales from back in her My Brother and Me days and I've been living for her social media posts. While we were trapped inside thanks to Chicago's recent polar vortex, Jeff and I decided to watch her HBO comedy special, I Be Knowin', and it. was. EVERYTHING!!!
To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of stand-up. I fell asleep when Kevin Hart was at the United Center a few years back, and also when Bill Burr played the Chicago Theatre. Maybe I'm just not into men in comedy?
But Black women who can speak to the struggles I face as a professional Black woman? All the way YES!
