"Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare." — Audre Lorde
Morning Musings
I'm a big believer in signs. And in the last few years, I've noticed that the Universe tends to reward me with sets of three signs when I'm in search of answers or guidance.
A recent theme that's been popping up for me lately is rest. Or, more specifically, a sabbatical. Interestingly enough, I discovered during a sermon about (you guessed it) rest, that the root word of sabbatical is Sabbath (duh, L'Oreal), which comes from the Hebrew word "shabbat," meaning "to rest from labor."Â

Earlier this year, I'd been thinking about taking a summer sabbatical from freelancing to focus on personal writing -- namely writing posts for my actual blog and revamping my book proposal (again). I've been burning the candle at both ends and it's starting to show. I need a break because burning out from writing about self-care would be the ultimate form of irony.
Next came the sermon about blessed rest and sacred rhythms. Then later that week, our new CEO (a Black woman, no less) issued an org-wide weeklong sabbatical for collective rest as her first order of business. Yes, we're living into our core value of self-care at OneGoal HARD (and we're hiring, come work with me!).Â
And, like the workaholic that I am, my brain immediately thought, "A week off from work? Cool! I can spend it at The Wing working on my writing." Umm, not the point. As my work bestie Pam said (hi, Pam!), "here's the point ... and you're wayyyy over here." And she's right.
Taking note of the signs, I submitted my summer sabbatical to my editors and they were more than understanding. And I am not planning anything that first week of July during our work sabbatical. I will read, I will go to the beach (if Chicago's weather is cooperating by then), and I will rest.Â

And if I'm feeling so inspired to do some writing then, than so be it. But I'm tired of running on E and I look forward to replenishing my cup this summer by honoring the Sabbath and resting from labor.
Because as my pastor, Jarrett Stevens said, "If you don’t incorporate rest into your life, you will be exhausted for the rest of your life." And I don't know about you, but that's not how I want to live.
Love,
L'OrealÂ

My brain and my laptop are quite similar—both have about 20 tabs open at all times. But, unlike my laptop, I can’t seem to shut down my brain at night. My thoughts immediately become consumed with my to-do lists, forgotten tasks, and overall work-related anxiety. To ease my stress, I tested the theory of Deliberate Worry in my latest for Shine.

More than anything, I need Ali Wong to come out with an eyewear line, like yesterday. But that's besides the point. I'm always here for more diversity in rom-coms (all genres, yes, but Single White Females aren't the only people who deserve to fall in love). Black women, Latinx women and Asian women need love, too. Thank you, Always Be My Maybe, for reminding us that #RepresentationMatters. Always.
