"If you feel insignificant, you better think again / Better wake up because you're part of something way bigger." — Beyoncé
Morning Musings
If you've been following me for a while, then it should come as no surprise to you that today's newsletter is all about the one, the only Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter in honor of her 38th birthday.

Truth be told, I've been a proud member of the BeyHive for two decades and counting. I remember visiting C-Mart back in the day and my mom buying Destiny's Child debut album on cassette tape.
I'd been singing "No, No, No" for months and quietly (permanently) borrowed the tape for my own collection. Heck, I even remember a teen magazine providing a parenthetical pronunciation for the lead singer's name (saying it rhymed with fiancée). It’s safe to say we all know how to pronounce Beyoncé's name now.

And sis has been providing the soundtrack to my life ever since. Never mind I didn't have any bills back in '99, that song STILL slaps, as the kids say these days.
Quite honestly, The Writings On The Wall is a WHOLE mood. "Survivor," on the other hand, gave me the strength I needed to get through middle school bullying. "Bootylicious" made me PROUD of my then-newfound curves (thanks, puberty). The group, as a whole, inspired me to be an independent woman (and, if you ask me, Part II is better than Part I. Don't @ me).
And when I heard "Brown Eyes" and "Dangerously In Love," 13-year-old L'Oreal was already picturing her future husband and how he would treat her (hi, Jeff ... I'm so glad you live up to my teenage daydreams).

I could go on and on ("Love On Top" was the first dance song at our wedding, the entire HOMECOMING album is my go-to Wash Day and workout soundtrack and lately I've been listening to The Lion King: The Gift on repeat).
Yes, I love Beyoncé the artist. But also Beyoncé the businesswoman, the visionary, the family woman. And you can say what you want, but her work ethic is unmatched (I mean, did you see the Homecoming documentary?!).
It may sound trite and it may not make perfect sense, but a large part of the woman I am today is because of Bey. I will forever bow down.
Love,
L'Oreal

My Latest Obsession

After reading (and raving over) Elizabeth Acevedo's With The Fire On High (which is about to become a movie, NBD), I knew I had to read her debut, The Poet X. Now, don't disown me, but I've never been the biggest fan of poetry. It's just never really been my jam (as evident by the 'B' I got in Intro to Writing Fiction & Poetry in college).
But The Poet X? I devoured it in a matter of days. It reads as a novel, but is composed of standalone poems that, combined, create a powerful narrative. I smirked. I cried. I wanted more.
