"I just want the world to know that I'm THAT girl." — Sha’Carri Richardson
Morning Musings
I love Black women. If you're a frequent reader of this newsletter, you already know it's #BlackGirlMagic 24/7/365 around here. But I especially love the unapologetic confidence and Blackness of this younger generation: Megan Thee Stallion, Chloe x Halle and now, Sha'Carri Richardson.
This past weekend the Texas native became the fastest woman in America and in the post-meet interview proudly proclaimed, "I just want the world to know that I'm THAT girl."
Pure talent aside, the nails, the hair, the big Flo-Jo energy made me stand up and take notice. As Transparent Black Girl founder Yasmine Jameelah recently wrote, "I hope Black women keep talking cash shit cuz it's a form of inner child healing. I'm that girl energy is deep inside us all but many of us are taught to bury it, to downplay our light. That girls like us can't be that girl. That day is done. In all the lanes - WE ARE THAT GIRL."
Needless to say, I was nowhere as confident as Sh'Carri when I was 21. I like to think I've gotten better in my older age, but the truth is I still don't boast nearly as much as I could because of a deep-rooted fear of what Other People will think. Ask any Black girl of a certain age and there comes a certain dread of people asking, "Who does she think she is?"
Well, it's taken 33 years, but I finally have an answer: I'm THAT girl.
Love,
L'Oreal

My Latest Obsession
Every time husbae invites me to watch one of the new Marvel shows with him, I politely decline. Then I catch a glimpse of an episode and next thing I know I'm hooked. It's happened with WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and now with Loki. What can I say? I'm a sucker for good storytelling and Marvel is damn good at it.
