Morning Musings
A few weeks into my role at Fortune my boss's boss asked if I wanted to write a story about Black women in leadership positions, specifically Black women who were hired in 2020 as part of many companies' DEI initiatives and have since resigned.
Simone Oliver, Refinery29's global editor-in-chief had just stepped down from her role--one she'd been tapped for in the summer of 2020 amid the country's "racial reckoning."
When Oliver joined Refinery29 in September 2020, it was three months after the publication’s co-founder and global editor-in-chief Christene Barberich had resigned amid public outcry from employees about workplace discrimination and lack of racial diversity. The situation was a classic example of a Black woman being called in to clean up a mess she didn’t create--a phenomenon known as the "glass cliff."
It took weeks of reporting and I turned to two of my favorite thought leaders, Kyra Kyles, CEO of YR Media, and bestselling author Minda Harts to learn more about their experiences. And they did not disappoint.
“It’s not equitable to put Black women in positions where they’re not being supported,” Minda told me. “It’s unfortunate that a lot of us are put in positions to turn water into wine.”
I hope you'll check out the full article and let me know what you think.

My Latest Obsession
I've only watched the first episode of the new Netflix limited series From Scratch, based on the memoir by Tembi Locke, but I'm already obsessed. I've also heard it's a tearjerker, so I'm pacing myself. But yea, love story + Italian food = a very pleased L'Oreal.
