“I write because I am a warrior and my poetry is my primary weapon.” ~ Audre Lorde
Morning Musings
Years ago, I read a quote by science fiction writer Isaac Asimov that read, “I write for the same reason I breathe—because if I didn't, I would die.” As someone who’s been writing since the tender age of three, his quote resonated with me deeply. Indeed, it’s exactly how I feel about writing as well.
A lot has changed since the above picture was taken. For starters, I went on to become an award-winning journalist and a published author. Writing has always been (and I imagine it always will be) my sanctuary.
I’ve kept a journal since middle school. What began as a recap of my day (what I learned at school; who I had a crush on; the latest Spice Girl song), eventually evolved into the safe space to share my innermost thoughts and emotions.
Writing is how I make sense of the world and, after serving as editor-in-chief of the student newspaper at my high school, I realized my words could also help others. And that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do—help other people, especially Black women and girls, feel less alone. It never ceases to amaze me that I’ve been able to make a living doing just that, whether it’s through my books; journalism stories; podcast interviews; workshops and other speaking engagements.
As I shared in last week’s newsletter, I’m currently working on the sample chapters for my forthcoming infertility memoir. No, we don’t have a book deal (yet), but I know this story is important and can help so many, so I’m committing to putting the perfectionism (and procrastination) aside to do the damn thing.
Virtual writing communities, such as Permission to Write by
, have been an integral part of my creative process, which is why this year I’m forming one of my own. It’s been said that writing is a solitary sport, but it doesn’t have to be. I’ve found that community and accountability are necessary, so (selfishly) I’m creating that for myself and other writers as part of
‘s #1000wordsofsummer.The premise is simple: write 1,000 words every day from June 1-14. You can learn more about how to prep here. There are about 40 people signed up so far (eek!) and I want to answer a few questions y’all may have:
Is it free?
Yes, really!
Do I have to write every day?
No, how much or how little you write is entirely up to you. I like to think of the word count as a suggestion, not a rule. Also, outlining, research, interviews, etc. all count as writing to me!
I’m not really a writer. Can I join?
Do you write? Then you’re a writer! You can absolutely sit with us.
I’m a poet. Can I join?
Please see above. Also, this is open to all kinds of writing. People who’ve signed up so far are working on book proposals, articles, dissertations, marketing copy, you name it. Writing is writing is writing is writing.
If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to hit me up. It’s going to be real chill vibes, complete with lofi music in the background and your beverage of choice. See you there?
