“my job isn’t to figure out how it’s going to happen. it’s to show up & watch God make it happen.” ~
Morning Musings
If you’ve been following this newsletter for any amount of time within the past nearly two years, then you know ya girl has been going through it when it comes to figuring out my postpartum style. As such, I made the decision earlier this year in invest in a personal stylist for my upcoming book tour.
Why? These are arguably some of the most important and highly anticipated events of my professional career so far and I want to look good, be comfortable and feel confident when I enter the room.
Even though I don’t consider myself a fashion girlie, I do believe that our clothes are a reflection of our personal style and our values. As an author, my style is also an extension of my brand.
So when I met with
of to share the vision for my tour outfits, I made sure to communicate those goals (and my budget). And she delivered:These items are I wouldn’t have necessarily picked for myself, but as the subtitle to my book suggests I’m learning to step out of my comfort zone and into my power. Fashion plays a large role in how many of us step into our power. When you look good, you can’t help but feel good. It’s been said you should dress for the job you want, not the job you have and baby, I’m dressing as a bestselling author, OKAY?!
As author
wrote so eloquently in her newsletter:“This is an essay about being in our bodies, out in the world. Which for you might happen every day at your office job, or at least every few weeks because you’re dating new people, or insert all the other reasons we leave the house fully clothed here. But as a writer who works from home, pretty much the only time I am a body in the world, at least in a public way, is on a book tour.”
Yes, it’s a privilege to hire a stylist and there are also great free resources (like Lakyn’s newsletter) to help you figure out your personal style as well. Whether it’s a power suit, freakum dress or six-inch heels, we all deserve to look and feel our best. What’s your go-to for feeling fabulous? Let me know in the comments and bonus points if you drop brands/links so others can check it out, too!

Links I Love
Age is not a barrier for these pole-dancing grannies (The Baltimore Banner)
Meet the Black outdoorsy groups reclaiming the joys of nature (NBCBLK)
The Transgender Family Handbook (The Cut)
My Latest Obsession
The Bear, Hulu’s original series about a (fictional) Chicago-based restaurant and its staff, is back and the timing couldn’t be better. The premiere of season two comes after one of my other favorite shows, Never Have I Ever, recently ended leaving a hole in my must-watch shows list. Of course I love the nods to Chicago, my second city, and naturally Syd, the Black woman chef is my favorite character. We’re only four episodes in so far, but I hear episode six is a doozy!
