Morning Musings
First there was #HotGirlSummer. Then there was #HotMomSummer. And now, I present to you 2023’s version: #SoftGirlSummer. The idea was inspired by an article I wrote earlier this year about TikTok’s #softlife trend, but with an emphasis on how Black women are leaning into the lifestyle.
Of course, I invite Black women everywhere to live the soft life year-round, but something about summertime just seems to make that more plausible: longer days, shorter hemlines and a cool refreshing beverage of your choice (margaritas, anyone?).
Summer is perfect for taking afternoon naps; dropping it like it’s hot at someone’s day party; and jetsetting to a tropical locale, if that’s more your speed. Whatever brings you joy, I encourage you to do more of that this summer. Work less. Read more. Laugh often.
To kick off the #SoftGirlSummer series on the podcast this month, I interviewed Oludara Adeeyo, a mental health therapist and author of Self-Care for Black Women and Affirmations for Black Women: A Journal.
In this episode, she shares tips for taking a social media break, reasons why you should #TreatYourself to facials and suggestions on how to infuse more joy into your life.
